Semi Trailer Dimensions & Specifications Guide

Legal length, width, height and axle weight limits vary by country, and getting them wrong means fines or a rejected load at the scale. Here's the dimension reference we give every buyer before they sign a spec sheet.

Length: What "48 ft vs 53 ft" Actually Means

The dimensions of a semi truck trailer start with overall length, and the number on the spec sheet is rarely the number you load against. A 53 ft dry van trailer has roughly 630 sq ft of floor space after wheel-well intrusion, while a 48 ft flatbed gives you the full deck length to work with since there's no box wall eating into usable space. In the US and most RHD markets, 53 ft (16.15m) is the practical maximum length of semi truck trailer units under standard permits; go longer and you're into oversize-load territory needing pilot cars and route surveys. In Europe and most ISO-standard markets the ceiling is 13.6m (44.6 ft) for a standard semi-trailer, which is why European curtain-siders and box trailers top out shorter than their US counterparts even though the tractor-trailer combination length limits are similar.

Width and Height: The Legal Envelope Most Countries Share

Width and height are where most import buyers get caught out, because "legal" varies by country and the manufacturer's spec sheet usually quotes the widest global standard. 2.5m (8.2 ft) is the width ceiling in the EU, most of Africa and Southeast Asia; the US and Canada allow 2.6m (8.5 ft). The regulated height of semi truck trailer loads maxes out at 4.0m (13.1 ft) in the EU and 4.11m (13.6 ft) in the US, measured from the ground to the highest point of the load — not the empty deck. A standard flatbed trailer deck sits at 1.4m, so you've got roughly 2.6m of stack height before you need an escort permit; a lowbed trailer deck at 0.5-0.9m buys back that difference for tall machinery.

Deck Height and Kingpin Setting

Deck height and kingpin setting decide how a load actually rides, and they're specced separately from overall trailer length. Kingpin setting — the distance from the kingpin to the front of the trailer — typically runs 600-750mm on flatbeds and dry vans, tuned to keep axle weight distribution legal once the tractor is hooked up. Kingpin height is standardized at 1.2m (47.24 in) SAE height or 1.15m for low-profile fifth wheels; get this wrong and the trailer either won't couple or rides nose-down. On heavy-haul RGN trailers, deck height is the entire point of the design — dropping to 20-24 in at the well lets you haul a 12-13 ft tall excavator and still clear the 13.6 ft legal height limit.

Axle Configuration and Weight Ratings

Axle configuration is the other half of the dimensions conversation, since weight rating and physical footprint move together. A tandem-axle (2-axle) semi-trailer is typically rated 32-34 tons GVW; add a third axle (tridem) and you're at 40 tons in most jurisdictions, the standard configuration for flatbeds, curtain-siders and tankers. Heavy-haul work pushes further: 4-line, 6-line and multi-line lowbed trailers stack axle lines to spread 60-100+ tons across the road surface within bridge-formula limits. Each added axle line adds roughly 8-10 tons of legal capacity but also adds length and turning radius, so the right axle count depends on your typical payload weight, not just the maximum you might someday haul.

Dimensions by Trailer Type — Quick Reference

As a quick reference for common semi trailer measurements: flatbed trailers run 40-53 ft long, 2.5m wide, 1.4m deck height, 32-40 ton GVW; lowbed trailers run 30-60 ft, 2.5-3m wide, 0.5-0.9m deck height, 40-100 ton GVW; dry van trailers run 45-53 ft, 2.5m wide, 4m overall height, 34-40 ton GVW; fuel tanker trailers carry 30,000-45,000L in a 9-12m tank barrel rated to 40 tons GVW. These are starting points, not guarantees — always confirm the dimensions of a tractor trailer and its axle load limits against the specific corridor or country you're operating in, since South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the EU each cap gross combination weight differently.
