50 & 55 Ton Lowbed Trailer (RGN)
Fifty to fifty-five tons is where RGN — a hydraulic detachable gooseneck that drops the deck to the ground — starts showing up in the search term as often as lowboy. This is the class of tracked excavator and crane that operators stop wanting to winch up a ramp.
Over 10 years of manufacturing excellence, trusted by clients in 50+ countries.
At 50-55 tons the machinery is usually a 40-45 ton excavator, a mid-size crawler crane, or a wheel loader that is heavy and awkward enough that a ramp angle starts to matter. That is why buyers searching this bracket increasingly type "RGN" alongside "lowboy" — a removable gooseneck trailer that unpins at the front and lets the whole deck settle flat on the ground, so tracked equipment drives straight on instead of climbing.
We build the standard fixed-gooseneck version at this rating too, and it costs less. RGN earns its price when your equipment can't safely manage a ramp or your yard has nowhere to build one.
Why RGN Shows Up at This Weight
Below about 35-40 tons, most equipment can climb a reasonable ramp angle without issue. Above that, low-clearance machines — pavers, some crawler cranes, older excavators with worn undercarriages — start struggling, and the ramp itself needs to be longer and heavier to keep the angle safe. A detachable gooseneck sidesteps the problem: the front pins release, the neck swings away, and the deck kneels to ground level so the machine drives straight on under its own power.
Fixed Gooseneck vs Hydraulic RGN at 50-55 Tons
Fixed gooseneck — lower tare weight, lower cost, nothing hydraulic to service. The right choice if your equipment loads fine over rear ramps and you are not paying for a feature you won't use.
Hydraulic RGN — the neck disconnects and re-engages in under two minutes with the hydraulic version. Costs more and adds roughly 1,500-2,000kg tare, but is worth it for fleets loading low-clearance or difficult-to-ramp machinery regularly, or loading in yards without a proper ramp setup.
Specification Notes at 50-55 Tons
Axle count. Three 13-ton axles is the standard build at this rating. Two axles are legal in a few markets but the axle loads they produce fail weighbridge checks on most export routes.
Deck height. Loaded deck height runs 400-600mm depending on tyre size — enough to clear standard bridge limits with an excavator cab on deck while still using tyres you can source locally.
Suspension. Mechanical bogie is standard and survives overload and rough roads better than air suspension; it is what we recommend for African, Middle Eastern and Central Asian routes.
Other Ratings We Build
Lighter loads: the 40 ton lowbed. Heavier: our high-volume 60 ton lowbed trailer and the 70-80 ton lowbed. Full range: lowbed trailer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an RGN trailer and do I need one at 50 tons?
RGN stands for removable gooseneck — a hydraulic or mechanical system that unpins the front of the trailer so the deck settles to ground level for drive-on loading. You need one if your equipment can't manage a ramp angle safely, or your loading site has no ramp setup. If your machinery loads fine over rear ramps, the fixed-gooseneck version at the same payload costs less.
What equipment does a 50-55 ton lowbed carry?
Typically a 40-45 ton excavator with attachments and fuel, a mid-size crawler crane, or a large wheel loader. As with any rating, we build in a working margin rather than sizing the trailer to the exact nameplate weight of the machine.
How many axles do I need for 50-55 tons?
Three 13-ton axles is the standard export build. Two axles are legal in a few markets but produce axle loads that fail weighbridges on most routes — tell us your destination and we'll confirm before you order.
What is the delivery time and how is it shipped?
Standard 3-axle builds are typically 25-35 days from order confirmation. RGN units ship with the gooseneck detached to reduce overall shipping height where needed. We quote CIF to most African, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian ports.
